The musical version of much-loved animated film Shrek romps onto the Birmingham stage.

Shrek the Musical is now playing at The Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham.

This Broadway musical, based on the critically-acclaimed Dreamworks Animation studio film, opened way back in 2008 and became an instant hit with audiences of all ages.

The successful show soon found its way into London's West End, and is currently on a new tour across the country.

The lyrics and books are by David Lindsay-Abaire, while the music is by Jeanine Tesori. The creators keep a beautiful balance between tongue-in-cheek humour and some serious moments that emphasise the importance of love, friendship and trust. The melodious songs keep toes tapping, and the narrative keeps flying along smoothly.

All of the iconic characters from the animated film are present and correct. Shrek, Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad, Donkey and Dragon mingle with the various fairytale characters from the cartoon. The surreal and dreamy interactions between the characters soon hooked and gripped the audience.

The cast were absolutely amazing in their roles in this production. The title role is taken by Antony Lawrence who does a superb job from beginning until the rousing ‘I’m a Believer’ climax which had people standing up and dancing along to the infectious choreography.

The love of Shrek’s life, Princess Fiona, is sung and danced by Joanne Clifton. She brings warmth and a bubbly energy to her role.

The part of Shrek’s irascible friend Donkey is performed by Brandon Lee Sears who had people roaring with laughter with witty wisecracks and dry humour.

The comedy element continues with James Gillan who gives the role of Lord Farquaad a fiendish and funny aspect, sometimes both qualities shine at the same time which requires serious talent.

The vocals of Cherece Richards, who brings Dragon to life with her fiery singing, are powerful and fill the auditorium with a range of tonal colours.

The direction by Samuel Holmes and Nick Winston (who is also the mastermind behind the brilliant choreography) is full of sparkle and lilting energy.

The bold and bright costumes, inventive puppetry, dynamic video projections at key moments, and a sterling stage design that even includes Dragon flying out of a window, are absolutely magical.

Shrek the Musical is a magical show that will have you believing in fairytales.
